Hello 2012
2012, January 23 - 3:36pm — yasgblinIt's 2012 and Teen Programming is in full swing again!
Dungeons and Dragons has started off with bang, with Teens Joey and Jadyn debuting a brand new dungeon that has the potential to be the biggest challenge our Teen adventurers have faced.
Comic Book Throwdown is also off to a strong start! So far we have read great comics like Ultimate Spiderman, Blue Beetle and Supergirl! Next week we are reading Justice League and Avengers Academy! We have also completed two tournaments the "Alberta Holidays" and "Best Video Games" Tournaments with the winners being "Christmas" and "Skyrm" being the champions!
Stay tuned for more incredible information regarding our great Teen Programs.

Final Comic Book Throwdown of 2011
2011, December 8 - 4:11pm — yasgblinAll good things must come to an end. And alas, Comic Book Throwdown has had its last session for 2011.
We had a lof fun, played lots of games and had ridiculous drafts. Our Star Wars Tournament last week was Epic! After narrowing down a field of 32 star wars characters it came down to Luke vs. Leia and with help from first time Comics Book Throwdown attendee Alysa (who has never seen any Star Wars movies) Leia emerged as the winner of our first annual Spruce Grove Public Library Star Wars character tournament.
Anyway, he had our final Throwdown, and due to financial restraints we had to cut our eight titles in half. The remaining contenders were: Justice League, Blue Beetle, Teen Titans, Action Comics, Ultimate Spiderman, Wolverine and the X-Men, Avengers Academy and Supergirl.
Faced with hard choices our Comic Book Throwdowners... hacked and slashed until only Teen Titans, Blue Beetle, Wolverine and the X-men and Avengers Academy remained.
It should be noted that Avengers Academy emerged victorious as the official Comic Book Throwdown Comic of 2011. It is also important to note, that no one at Comic Book throwdown has actually read Avengers Academy. Which is what makes Comic Book Throwdown so amazing!
ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN!
So while I am sad to see Ultimate Spiderman and Justice League go, I am excited for the new year because we will finally get to read the offical Comic Book Throwdown Comic of 2011.
I had a lot of fun this year! And remember, if you live in Spruce Grove, love comics you should come down to the library!
Anyway, I can't figure out how to embed videos on our blog, so here is a link to a quick video I have posted that we made at our last comic book throwdown: http://youtu.be/dVPPkdR4Hzg

Teen News at the Library!
2011, November 9 - 11:06am — yasgblinHello all!
Exciting things have been happening at the SGPL! First off we have recently celebrated our fiftieth anniversary and launched our new branding effort!
More specific to the teens and youth at the library, we now have a brand new Teen Gaming Collection. Included in the collection are popular board games and roleplaying supplements!

Some of the board games we have include: Settlers of Catan, Zombies!, Munchkin and Ticket to Ride. Currently we only have 4th edition Dungeons and Dragons role playing supplements, but we will be adding Mutants and Masterminds, DC Adventures and Star Wars Saga Edition soon!
Whether you are an experienced gamer, or you are looking to try out something new the Teen Gaming Collection is for everyone. Everything you need to play a game, or start a role playing game campaign is there on the shelves including character sheets and dice!
Teen Comic Book Throwdown: Superboy vs. Spiderman!
2011, October 20 - 3:02pm — yasgblinA lot has happened since the last Comic Book Throwdown update a few weeks ago. First, in case you missed it we eliminated Green Lantern and Batgirl! Yes, harsh I know... but the Comic Book Throwdown is a ruthless book club with no room for sentimentality.
Since then we have had a couple of tournaments to determine the greatest super hero and villains of all time. First up in our Superhero pool, we the number 13 seeded Deadpool defeated everyone to become the official Comic Book Throwdown Superhero.
This week we read Ultimate Spiderman #3 and Superboy #2. Ultimate Spiderman #3 has been getting some pretty good reviews (as pointed out by our twitter friend @bigbaddru), but the Comic Book Throwdown crew remains unconvinced. On a scale of their favourite soda pop to their least favorite, Comic Book Throwdown gave it a Pepsi rating. They still don't get where the story is going but it seems to be pretty cool.
Since Ultimate Spiderman was our only official Comic Book Throwdown title, we decided to try something new with Superboy. However, it was given a Fresca rating because it was weird and didn't make any sense.
So there you have it! Our Comic Book Throwdown is going into full swing! Next week we read Justice League #2 and Blue Beetle #2!
Should be fun!

On to the adventure!:
.jpg)
As our adventuring groups continued onto the next level of the dungeon they encountered...big surprise here...more kobolds! This time they were in a room with a very large pit of ooze in the middle of the floor and against the far wall was a raised ledge on either side of the door. On that ledge was were the kobolds were hanging out.
Immediately upon entering the room our adventures were attacked and being peppered from the kobolds on the ledge with glue shots, swinging boulders, and all sorts of projectile weapons. Some of them missing, the most epic being Bi-Frost’s, because as he bent to tie his shoe a missile went whizzing by his head. Which, didn’t really matter as Bi-Frost was the first to take down a Kobold, clearly showing that a tied shoe makes all the difference.
Corrin(previously named Kriepel) was the first to climb the wall, and jump down from the wall, because as soon as he made it to the top he was overwhelmed by a creature that closely resembles a smaller form of a dragon. Luckily we had a cleric on hand, and he was healed by Zack which enabled him to continue on with the fight.
Now as all of this was going on Fonrar tried to climb the wall, and after that didn’t work decided to work with Slayer and Darkness to break down the door. Of course it worked being that all three are very strong warriors, and into the room the charged only to find more dragon like creatures. It was mass destruction from this point.
Fonrar was into Bar-B-Q and so used his dragon breath to destroy a Kobold. Darkness thought it would be a good idea to do a “fastball special” and tossed Corrin at one of the creatures, and he was able to injure him. Once Corrin defeated him, he celebrated with a victory back flip.
Zephyra was out in the main room, trying to pick of the kobolds with her bow, and she seemed to have some luck, mostly because one had a bad fall of the wall that she was able to take out without an issue.
With all of the chaos and mass destruction the adventures were able to clear the area of all creatures and now they are going to take a break, to rest up their strength and powers. As the new day dawns, they are about to embark onto the next level, and who knows what they may find there, as they have yet to find their Dragon Pelt...Tune in next time!
Our Adventurers:
Bi-Frost – Breydon
Corrin – Andre
Darkness – Joey
Fonrar --- Aaron
Zephyra – April
Slayer – Sheldon
Silverwing – Jaidyn
The Cleric -- Zack

Teen Dungeons and Dragons Session 3 Recap
2011, September 24 - 2:31pm — yasgblinWhile this was happening , Bi-Frost (played by Breydon) was being taunted by the kobolds to take action and try their best to destroy each other, and Kreipel (played by Andre) was busy taunting the kobolds back while jumping on top of the coffins to avoid anymore traps and yelling out: “Come get some!”. Magic was cast by Silverwing (played by Jaidyn) in the form of a Cloud of Daggers to put around the kobolds in hopes to delay and injure them while the rest of the party attempted to finish them off.
Once the Kobolds had been defeated, and Darkness was rescued from the trap zone, Bi-Frost stepped up to the alter and found a bag of gold coins and so the adventure for the day ended...
Coming soon...the next mysterious room to be explored, who knows what’s behind door #3? More kobolds? Probably. More Gold? Hopefully. All that is known for sure is that they have yet to find the dragon scale “pelt”, and so the adventure continues...

New Avengers Avengers Bonanza!
2011, September 16 - 2:22pm — yasgblinWe've all heard of Marvel's Avengers! Created in the 60's featuring most Marvel's greatest super heroes such as Iron Man, Giant-Man, The Wasp, Quicksilver, Captain America, Starfox... the list goes on!
But in the mid 2000s, the Avengers were shook up and characters that we never thought we would see on the Avengers signed up! Spider-Man! Wolverine and even... Luke Cage! They were known as the New Avengers!
Kind of like when the New Kids on the Block came in and replaced the Kids on the Block!
Anyway, we recently received a donation of the first eleven volumes of New Avengers and I was a little surprised to see that that there are only 4 volumes in the entire Yellowhead system. So chances are these books are going to get checked out fast. So check our catalogue often, to see when they finally go online so you can place a hold on them!

Teen Dungeons and Dragons Session 2 Recap
2011, September 13 - 12:04pm — yasgblinThe party (made up of our intrepid teen adventurers) was hired by a dwarven armourer to retrieve a rare dragon scale “pelt” that was stolen by a pack of kobolds.
The armourer tracked the pelt down to the ruins of a keep known as the "Kobold Hall" . Wanting money, the group thought it would be a good idea to take the job! Once they made it into the keep, the adventurers had their first battle with a handful of kobolds.
After some futile attempts throwing the dwarf into a pit of green, glowing ooze, for some reason the adventures finally deciding to just jump in.
Evntually they were able to defeat the kobolds and continue on the second portion of the keep...
A few questions remain...what’s going to happen in the next room? Will the adventures stumble across another pit of slime? Or will someone successfully toss the dwarf?
Tune in next time!!!!

Teen Comic Book Throwdown Round 1 Recap!
2011, September 6 - 5:38pm — yasgblinWe had two guys show up today, Joel and Nick. We read Justice League #1, we had a ranked ladder of 16 Justice League members reduced to the top two and most of all we, we had a lot of fun!
First off, both Nick and Joey really liked Justice League #1. On a scale of 1 to 10, where 10 is The Hunger Games and 1 is a Social Studies textbook, Nick gave JL #1 a 10! He said he liked that you don't get to see all the characters right away and that he liked that you wanted more. As he put it: they don't cram every single character into every single Archie story.
Joey gave JL#1 a an 8.5 where 1 would be a textbook and a 10 would be D-Gray Man. He too is excited to see what is going to happen next and can't wait to see when Cyborg is going to appear!
We also held a deathmatch where we ranked 16 Justice League members and arbitrarily eleminated them until we were down to two... Superman and the Flash. And then we couldn't decide who was the strongest... I'm not sure what kind of deathmatch we are doing next week. But I'm sure it's going to be awesome!
If you are a Spruce Grove Teen and are interested in joining Comic Book Throw Down, be sure to send me an e-mail at brian@srpucegrovelibrary.org or just drop in at the library.

SGPL Adventurers Guild Episode 1
2011, August 19 - 10:41am — yasgblinWe are starting roughly in the middle of the adventure (In Media Res for you fancy arts people). Our adventurers are on a quest to find something called a Killing Stone which is lost somewhere in an abandoned city populated by goblins and kobolds.
Their last adventure ended when they had succsefully defended a group of Kobolds from a bunch of Goblin bullies....
The adventures gathered themselves together and put the Goblins that they had defeated into the crumbling, abandoned building and took off. They didn’t make it far when they had to hide in another building because a battalion of goblins began marching down the street.Once they made into the building safe and out of the street, they encountered some very angry looking kobolds. Now the group did befriend a few to see if they could help our group, but unfortunately the kobolds that were escaping with the group were unsuccessful in convincing the angry kobolds into not attacking. Luckily the group was able to defeat the kobolds and discovered a secret passage way where they were able to uncover a small treasure of 40 gold pieces.
The group continued on and were forced to seek refuge in another abandoned building where so far the only things that they were able to see was a few disturbing sites. A few goblins that have been chewed on, two sarcophagi, and a lever on the far side of the room. The adventures finished their session discussing what to do next...
Stay tuned for next week! What will our crazy adventurers do next!?
