Provincial Justice Minister Jonathan Denis has announced a series of changes, meant to unclog both the Court of Queen’s Bench and the provincial court system. Suppose you get into a dispute with an employer about the wages you’re owed, or into an argument with your business partner or your former brother-in-law about a loan that wasn’t paid back. Right now, if your claim is worth less than $25,000, you can go into provincial “small claims” court to have your case heard. If the lawsuit involves more than $25,000, you have no choice but to head for the much more formal, and potentially expensive, superior Court of Queen’s Bench, where you’re more likely to pay a lawyer a major retainer to proceed.
